Summary of "Le Nouvel Observateur" article on HIV and AIDS

The French magazine Le Nouvel Observateur began in July 2009 to publish a “Summer Series” on the topic of the ‘Conspiracy Theories’. In the first issue, the topic of Aids was approached, in relation with doubts among the public about the flu A–H1–N1, through a general introduction and the presentation of 4 theories : the official one, and 3 “whimsical” others:

The official version presented is that AIDS is caused by HIV, which attacks the T-lymphocytes until the subsequent “opportunist infections” sicken and then kill the victim. The appearance of Aids can take 10 years according to the theory they describe. The origin of the HIV would be the “SIV” (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus), contracted by hunting the animal.

The first “conspiracy theory” refers to Robert Strecker and his opinion that the HIV has been deliberately fabricated by the American government. This includes a reference to Dr. Leonard Horowitz and his conviction that the virus was spread via vaccination campaigns in Africa and America with the complicity of the WHO. Then is invoked the thesis of the lawyer and veteran of the US Navy Boyd E. Graves (who died June 18^th 2009) which is of a racial genocide against the black population, with statistical explanations, a reference to a Virus Program run from 1948 to 1978, and an allusion to the Tuskegee Experiment. In addition is the theory of an homophobic genocide, which points at the Hepatis B vaccination campaign of 1979 in Manhattan and the fact that 93% of the vaccinated persons (all gay volunteers) were dead by 1993. Lastly is presented the Alan Cantwell’s thesis of a pharmacological genocide involving virologists, epidemiologists, the NIH and the CDC, and so on, because of a collusion of interests.

According to the second “conspiracy theory” AIDS does not exist. The term used to describe the proponents of this thesis and their positions is not “the denialists” (there is no such word in French), but “the negationists” (in French, however, this term is generally used as the strongest synonym for “revisionist”, and refers to the negation of the jewish holocaust, and particularly denying the existence of gas chambers in the Nazi era). Here follow first a mention of those who believe that AIDS can be simply healed by natural means, and of those who opponed themselves politically to the religious-right belief in “divine punishment” by based on an ideologically-oriented connection between AIDS, homosexuals and drug users.

Then are presented, in a much more accurate way, the positions of the scientifically educated critics called the “AIDS Dissidents” including Marc Griffiths, Peter Duesberg and the Perth Group, who affirm that HIV remains a mere hypothesis, and not the proved cause of Aids, and that AZT and other toxic AIDS drugs were and are the true reason for most of the diseases and deaths among people convinced to take therapy. The presentation claims however that this thesis has been notably weakened since the appearance of HAART (triple drug combinations including protease inhibitors) in 1996, and that consequently the majority of the scientific community considers the Dissidents to be “dangerous”.

After a short mention of the problems concerning HIV tests, the last theory presented treats as a cause of Aids the combinations of various stresses: chemical, nutritional and psychological (nocebo efffect). Thus, Africa is seen as suffering from malnutrition rather than an infectious AIDS epidemic.

The last “conspiracy theory” presented is the one of an experimental accident where the scientist Hilary Kropovski could have been responsible due to serious errors allowing contamination. The link between “SIV” (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) and HIV since the 19th century not being a convincing enough explanation, this theory supposes that SIV was inoculated in human populations during experiments on monkeys to generate the anti–polio vaccination campaigns involving a million people in the Belgian Congo between 1955 and 1960. Mentioned here are an article from 1992 by Tom Curtis, and the investigations of Edward Hooper, summarized in his book “The River, A journey to the source of HIV and Aids”.
