Concerns about HAART (Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy)

Kidney Damage (Nephrotoxicity)

HAART can cause damage to the kidneys, particularly some of the newer drugs. Terms related to the kidney are 'renal' or the prefix 'nephro-' (meaning associated with the kidney, such as “nephro-toxicity”), glomerular filtration (the system that removes waste products from the blood into the urine) and proteinuria (protein in the urine, a sign of kidney damage). Although humans have two kidneys, and can survive nicely with one, drugs are likely to damage both kidneys.
