Surrogate MarkersSurrogate Markers are lab measurements that substitute for real measures of health. The commonest surrogate markers used in HIV/AIDS research are CD4/CD8 cell counts/ratios and Viral Load. Decisions made on the basis of these lab counts should be interpreted with caution, particularly decisions that could prove damaging, such as starting antiretroviral medications in a healthy person.
