John Lauritsen points out that the AIDS “devastation” of Africa has occurred while the population has doubled and that neither HIV-1 or HIV-2 has been shown to cause AIDS. Too hot for Harvard Magazine to handle obviously, as after 6 months it still had not been published.

The preoccupation with HIV/AIDS in Africa has led us to supply expensive antiretroviral drugs to stave off a disease whose symptoms of illness appear an average of 10 years after infection, while leaving a much larger portion of the African populations to suffer malnutrition and other diseases that kill much more rapidly.

A group of doctors from Arkansas recently described how they intervened to enforce adherence to HAART drugs in HIV-positive children. Their paper raises serious scientific, social, legal and ethical questions. The major problem with this paper is the high level of uncertainty in several areas: determination of non-compliance, benefits from the forced intervention and the consequences of removing the children from their family. It does not appear that the right of the caregivers to make an informed decision (in this case to not give medications that can have serious and even life-threatening adverse effects) was acknowledged or respected.
